Mario Tennis 64 Game for Nintendo N64 System
General Information
Mario Tennis 64 is a video game developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo in August 2000. It is the sixth Super Mario game for the N64 system. It offers exceptional graphics for its platform, and the play controls are excellent.
A sports game in the vein of Mario Golf. Super Mario Bros Tennis gathers together friends and enemies of Mario to play tennis. Through the use of an N64 Transfer Pack, a player can import their characters from the Game Boy Color version of Mario Tennis to the Nintendo 64 game. It can also import the player's stats.
This is a simultaneous multi-player game (with up to 4 players). There are a few modes - Exhibition mode provides an easy friendly game for everyone, whereas Tournament mode is a lot tougher. There is also a fun "ring-shot" mode where you have to hit balls through rings. A range of different court types also add extra levels of complexity to the game. Nintendo has certainly spun this into a really fun game, in a genre that is often not the most popular.
The game is notable for the introduction of Waluigi (an enemy of Luigi's, and brother of Wario), the reintroduction of Princess Daisy (her last appearance was as Luigi's caddy in the 1991 game NES Open Tournament Golf), and the first-ever appearance of Birdo as a controllable character.
This game is also the first Mario game where Princess Peach spurts out hearts when hitting the ball; which has remained in subsequent Mario sports titles.
